John and Irene Kabuye: A Love for Middlesbrough and a Desire to Bring People Together

When John Kabuye first moved to Teesside in 2004, he remembers walking down the high street in Stockton and rarely seeing another Black face.

“On many occasions, people thought I was a footballer,” he laughs.
“They must have assumed I was a new signing.”

It was a different time then — but John’s story shows just how much the community has grown, and how powerful unity can be when people come together.
